The Skyline Club, opened in 1946 at 11306 North Lamar — which was called the Dallas Highway at the time and located 2.5 miles north of city limits — played host to acts like Elvis Presley, Ernest Tubb, Bob Wills and Marty Robbins. But it’s most famous for being the last venue that both Hank Williams and Johnny Horton ever played.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth men unknowingly gave their final performances at the Skyline before dying in their cars — Williams of heart failure in 1953 and Horton in a traffic accident in 1960. Even stranger, both men were married to the same woman when they died. Horton wed William’s widow Billie Jean Jones less than a year after Hank’s death.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter the Skyline Club closed in the early 70s, it had a second life as the Soap Creek Saloon, a prominent venue for Austin Outlaw Country artists like Willie Nelson and Jerry Jeff Walker. In the 80s, it became a popular place to catch rock and punk bands like The Meat Puppets. The building was demolished in 1989 and is now a CVS. The campus-area standard was plastered with pennants, old photos and neon. Festooned with bras and underwear hanging from the ceiling. Surly bartenders served up a solid selection of beers and frozen Everclear margaritas in red cups. Patrons drank, danced, shot pool and threw darts. It had everything you want in a great dive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also held a couple surprises. For one, the whole bar had a confusing rugby theme. That’s because Nasty’s was the official headquarters of Austin Huns Rugby. It was also home to a weekly 4-hour hip hop dance party led by Austin’s own DJ Mel, a nationally recognized turntablist. DJ Mel threw down at Nasty’s nearly every Monday from 1996 until the bar closed in 2017. Legend has it that Williams, who would later win three Grammy awards, was chased off the stage by the heckling of a group of salty regulars who were more interested in watching football on the bar’s TV than listening to her performance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Outhouse is famously the venue where Blaze Foley recorded his album “Live at the Austin Outhouse” a month before his tragic shooting death in 1989. Blaze frequented (and was frequently kicked out of) the Outhouse as both a performer and customer.
